SUMMARY:July 2024 Monday Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Put your knitting needles away\, grab your bifocals\, and join us for an action-packed comedy that will have you in stitches with its “high-speed” chases and “intense” action sequences. \nThelma is an absolutely hysterical action comedy with an unlikely star. Introducing Hollywood’s newest action hero\, 94-year-old June Squibb\, as Thelma. \nWhen Thelma Post (Squibb)\, a feisty yet sweet 93-year-old\, gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson\, taking her for a large sum of money\, she is left humiliated. After being dismissed by her family and the cops\, she sets out on a treacherous but hysterical adventure to retrieve her stolen money and prove to her family she is still capable of independence. Enlisting the help of her aging friend\, Ben (Richard Roundtree)\, and his prized motorized scooter\, Thelma takes off across Los Angeles to hunt down and confront the conman. Her daughter Gail (Parker Posey)\, son-in-law (Clark Gregg)\, and grandson Danny (Fred Hechinger) are left panicked when Thelma disappears and must confront their own shortcomings in the relationship. Thelma tackles real issues of aging\, family\, and independence while hilariously poking fun at every action movie trope imaginable.

SUMMARY:November 2024 Monday Movie Night - LEE
DESCRIPTION:  \nKate Winslet delivers a brilliant performance as WWII American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller. The film centers around a pivotal decade in Miller’s life and career\, during which she travels to the frontlines in Europe to capture the fight despite facing constant gender-based barriers to access.\n\nMiller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century’s most indelible images of war\, including an iconic photo of Miller herself\, posing defiantly in Hitler’s private bathtub. Her images display both the fragility and ferocity of the human experience. Above all\, the film shows how Miller lived her life at full throttle in pursuit of truth\, for which she paid a huge personal price\, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.

SUMMARY:April Monday Movie Night- BRING THEM HOME
DESCRIPTION:We’re truly excited to share the intimate and beautiful documentary\, Bring Them Home\, with you this month! We invite you to join us on April 28th at 6:30pm at the Galaxy Theatres Gig Harbor for this powerful film experience. \nBring Them Home/Aiskótáhkapiyaaya chronicles a decades-long initiative by members of the Blackfoot Confederacy to bring wild buffalo back to the Blackfeet Reservation. Along the way\, the initiative faces obstacles from ranchers who see the buffalo as a threat to the cattle ranches that dominate the land and are a legacy of colonization. Bring Them Home examines the deeply meaningful role that buffalo played in Blackfeet life prior to the arrival of settlers\, who nearly eradicated these majestic creatures. Regarded as fundamental to a healthy ecosystem and as spiritual relatives\, the removal of buffalo resulted in the loss of the Blackfeet way of life and a trauma that continues to reverberate today.

SUMMARY:July Monday Movie Night - FRIENDSHIP
DESCRIPTION:Oh\, boy\, do we have a wild ride for you this month! On Monday\, July 28th\, we will be screening the dark comedy Friendship. Join us at Galaxy Theaters Gig Harbor at 6:30 pm for this hilariously twisted film. \nSuburban dad Craig (played by the ridiculously awkward Tim Robinson) becomes infatuated with his charming new neighbor (played by Paul Rudd)\, but when his attempts to make an adult male friend fail\, his bids to win him over soon threaten to ruin both of their lives. \nThe trailer feels like a horror film (brought to you by A24)\, but the comedy lies in its intensity. The nightmare of trying to make friends as a socially awkward adult and the craziness of family dysfunction create a fine line between insanity\, absurdity\, and hilarity.

SUMMARY:JANUARY- Monday Movie Night - Double Feature - EVERY LITTLE THING and THE BIRD IN MY BACKYARD
DESCRIPTION:Happy New Year\, Gig Harbor Film Fans! \nWe are back with a very special Monday Movie Night\, which we have dubbed “Hummingbird Night!” Join us Monday\, January 26th at 6:30pm\, for a screening of Every Little Thing preceded by the short film The Bird in My Backyard. Everyone in attendance at Galaxy Theatres Gig Harbor will be entered into a raffle for a Hummingbird-themed gift basket. \nFull of joy and wonder\, Every Little Thing offers some profound truths in a deceptively simple story. The documentary follows Terry Masear\, the founder of Los Angeles Hummingbird Rescue\, as she cares for injured hummingbirds. Witnessing the fragility and resilience of the tiny creatures\, she experiences her own personal growth. Baby Hummingbirds\, Cactus\, and Wasabi captivate and will have audiencescelebrating their tiny victories and lamenting their tragedies. With breathtaking slow-motion photography and beautiful storytelling\, the film serves as a reminder that in the smallest acts\, and in the tiniest of creatures\, we might find grace. \nBefore our feature film\, we will screen The Bird in My Backyard\, a favorite from last year’s festival. In an urban backyard on Canada’s West Coast\, a window salesman has created a living laboratory for investigating hummingbird behavior. The Bird in My Backyard follows citizen scientist Eric Pittman as he documents the journeys of two hummingbirds as they attempt to raise their young in his urban garden. It’s a story about the childlike curiosity in all of us\, the wonders it can reveal\, and the doors it can open if we just lean in a bit closer. \n

SUMMARY:MARCH Monday Movie Night- MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN
DESCRIPTION:Pasha Talankin is an unlikely hero—a beloved Russian primary school teacher\, known as a mentor and prankster who offers students a safe haven in his office. After Russia invades Ukraine\, Pasha’s role in the school changes dramatically as he is reluctantly drawn into Putin’s propaganda machine. Forced to promote state-sanctioned messages and horrified by the transformation of his school and community\, he struggles with guilt and a sense of powerlessness\, leading him to become an international whistleblower. As the school’s videographer\, Pasha documents intimate and revealing footage of Putin’s regime\, capturing the rise of militarized children’s groups\, repressive laws\, fervent nationalism\, and the recruitment of graduating students to fight in the war. When he learns his own life may be at risk\, Pasha is forced to plan a dangerous escape from Russia. Directed by David Borenstein and co-directed by Pasha Talankin\, this uniquely collaborative film is as captivating and joyful as it is eye-opening and sobering. Mr. Nobody Against Putin showcases rare footage that reveals the profound impact of Putin’s regime on the lives of everyday Russians\, particularly its children.
